Greg Scheer


Greg Scheer (www.gregscheer.com) is a composer, author, speaker, and a music associate at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. His life's work includes two sons (Simon and Theo), two books (The Art of Worship, 2006, and Essential Worship, 2016), and hundreds of compositions, songs, and arrangements in a dizzying variety of styles.

Greg Scheer (www.gregscheer.com) is a composer, author, speaker, and a music associate at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. His writings include The Art of Worship: A Musician’s Guide to Leading Modern Worship (Baker Books, 2006), Essential Worship: A Handbook for Leaders (Baker Books, 2016) and contributions to The Hymn, Worship Leader, and New Songs of Celebration Render (ed C. Michael Hawn, GIA 2013). His work has been translated into eleven languages. His music is available from GIA, Augsburg Fortress, MorningStar, in numerous hymnals, and at www.gregscheer.com.

Composition Bio:

Greg Scheer has composed hundreds of pieces, songs and arrangements. His music is published by Augsburg Fortress, GIA, Abingdon Press, Worship Today, Faith Alive and in numerous hymnals. He has won commissions from the Iowa Choral Directors Association, Iowa Composers Forum, Linn-Mar High School String Orchestra, Chagall String Quartet and Northwestern College. His electronic piece, "Crossfade," was included on the CD ...from everlasting to everlasting... His string quartet "6" was featured on WQED in Pittsburgh and was also a winning composition in the 2000 Southeastern Composers' Symposium. His hymn "People of the Lord" won the Calvin09 hymn contest and was subsequently sung and published internationally.

Scheer is a member of Broadcast Music Incorporated, LicenSing, and Christian Copyright Licensing International. In 1993 he received an MA in composition and theory from the University of Pittsburgh. Since then he has served at Bellefield Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Wildwood Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and Church of the Servant, and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in Grand Rapids, MI.

Musical awards of a less official variety include winning the TopGolf Theme Contest with his song "Bring It On!", having his march "We Are the Cougars" named the official fight song of Illinios Central College, winning the FramesDirect Robot Dance Song contest, earning third place in the National Speleological Society Cave Ballad contest, placing in the top 5 of the Celldweller "The Best It's Gonna Get" remix contest, and enjoyng $100 of pizza for his song and Lego animation "Google Me!"

Is Greg accepting commissions?

Yes. Greg has been commissioned to compose pieces for professional ensembles, special occasions in the life of the church, schools, milestones in the lives' of clergy, festive choral events, highlights of the church year, theatrical productions, commercials, and music for unique instrumental combinations.
