  A Man Only Sees the Outside
words and music by Greg Scheer

This song juxtaposes Paul's discussion on the demands of the law in Romans 2:17-3:8 with David's prayer for mercy in Psalm 51. Together the verses drive home the point that no one can satisfy the requirements of the law unless their hearts are renewed by the Spirit.

1. A man only sees the outside of a life,
but God's eyes are searching within
to see if the light of His law is our guide;
to see if our faith is in Him.

Let us live with His law in our hearts
and His praise on our lips.
Let our lives clearly bear the mark
of His Spirit within.

2. Have mercy on me, my compassionate God,
because of Your unending love.
Against you alone have I sinned, O my Lord;
alone you are worthy to judge.

Grow in me a pure heart, O my Lord,
and renew my Spirit.
Let the bones You have broken rejoice
in Your love again.
